About This Site
We are in the middle of a revolution about teaching and learning woodturning. It is not too much to anticipate that this new media will dominate, if not supersede print and text based media. Even though ad hoc videos by non-professionals are generally less polished than books or magazines, their immediacy, innovation in subject material, and variety of presentation are likely, if not already, going to be the learning and communication medium of choice for turners and teachers.
So this is a non-commercial, cooperative site by and for woodturners to select, summarize and index lightly vetted, useful, free videos that can be shared and help us all build our turning skills and enjoyment. Please read Cautions below!.
One of the delights of woodturning and woodturners is that there is no shortage of opinions. And for every method presented in these videos there is likely an alternative or 3 or 4 and perhaps more. Often passionately held ideas. So enjoy the perspective of the turners in these videos, and evaluate for yourself alternatives in videos, books, demos, and from members in your local AAW chapter.
Many videos have practices with which I would not be comfortable, and are not done by a master turner for sure. Or may be done by master turners with the skill to "break the rules."
But in spite of these concerns the videos at minimum have the germ of an idea, or exploration of an alternative that is of some value to me, and I hope to others. I am guided by a very subjective standard "Does the video have some redeeming turning value." If so then that makes me want to list them.
Cautions!
Take care! Some of these videos show unsafe and unskilled practices. You should model your turning practices on established AAW Safety Practices, and known master turners in your club, or videos by turners based on your mentors' recommendations. The turners in Recommended Video Sites are examples of good turning practice.
How to Use This Site
Please take advantage of the new AAW Video Source site which has rich growing content. The AAW deserves your support for this endeavor and their other wide ranging services to turners.
This site will remain for a time as an archive of videos but none will be added.
